  • NASA selects heavy launch vehicle (HLV) candidates

Congress has asked for a vehicle that can scale from 70 to 130 MT to low Earth orbit (LEO). The Saturn V was 118 MT. Some of these companies could be team leads, while others could supply engines for attitude control, aeroshells, control systems, launch escape/landing, upper stages or solids.

WASHINGTON -- NASA has selected 13 companies for negotiations leading to potential contract awards to conduct systems analysis and trade studies for evaluating heavy-lift launch vehicle system concepts, propulsion technologies, and affordability.

    The selected companies are:

Aerojet General Corp., Rancho Cordova, Calif. (propulsion, reaction control)

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Huntsville, Ala. (visualization & multimedia)

Andrews Space, Tukwila, Wash. (aerodynamic modeling, rapid prototyping)

Alliant Techsystems, Huntsville, Ala. (large & small solids, shuttle SRB)

The Boeing Co., Huntsville, Ala. (Delta II & Delta IV boosters)

Lockheed Martin Corp., Huntsville, Ala. (Atlas V)

Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., Huntsville, Ala. (owns Rutan's Scaled Composites - SS1, SS2)

Orbital Sciences Corp., Chandler, Ariz. (small & medium boosters)

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, Canoga Park, Calif. (medium & large engines)

Science Applications International Corp., Huntsville, Ala. (engineering & technology applications)

Space Exploration Technologies Corp., Hawthorne, Calif. (SpaceX - out of the box design/boosters)

United Launch Alliance, Centennial, Colo. (launch provider for Atlas & Delta)
