it does look like a nicer product than the apple, but the apple fan's will not care.. I hope they actually advertise this, at least as much as apple does

It needs to ba a bit larger, and IMO this is a bit of desperation on RIM's part given their shrinking market share. Others will provide the larger size running Android and at a lower price than either RIM or Apple. A good thing.

I need to dig into that perhaps. My real dissapointment with RIM was the intorduction of Torch. I realy really wanted the bigger real estate with a real keyboard but the res is simply to low at 480*360 which I can get on a smaller and lighter Bold 9700...

What's crippling the Blackberry's right now are the lack of APPs, and if you so happened to find one good luck paying less than $10.00.

I still don't understand why anyone thinks there is a large market for tablets in the first place.

Because Apple released one so now everyone thinks they are in and cool.

                That is soooo true!

The iPad 2 will take what's existing and add a few extra features, then they will call revolutionary and then hardware manufacturers will scramble once again to try to compete hehe

I am not sure why you need all these apps for such a device.. provide a good web browser, with full Java/flash support and run any regular web app in it.

As for why you need a tablet.. I was wondering that myself, though they do look neat, if nothing else

I see a tablet extremely useful for the following applications...

1-Sales: Have you ever walked in a furniture store asked for a price and more details about a couch? The sales guy drops a 40 pound binder on a near by desk and starts flipping through pages?

Tablet = perfect solution for these guys with one app that lists all the products including pics etc all connected back to a server via wifi.

Cisco or HP sales rep goes to a clients location for a presentation, instead of a laptop, he can output the presentation from the tablet in HD and swipe through the pages easily and he'll look cool in the eyes of the client.

2-IT: you no longer have to drag a laptop everywhere to manage your network, servers, desktops etc. take a tablet with you which weighs less and has all the software loaded to manage your infrastructure.

3-Home, I would rather sit on my couch with a tablet connected via wifi, than a laptop any day.

4-Traveling, on a plane or train, pull out the tablet and browse, play your favorite games, edit a document, listen to music, watch a movie... and so on.

There are more, but keep in mind that no matter what tablet you buy, you are always going to need a full out desktop PC.

I never thought about apps until getting the iPhone, and now there are dozens installed. A very handy one is RedLaser - it reads a products barcode using the camera then goes comparison shopping both at stores and online to find better deals.

                          @ Doc >

I've played around with my buddy's Cherry Pal (7" Android tablet) and found it quite comfortable to use and type with. The device itself is crap but it's form factor feels very familiar.

anyone who's played with a PSP or DS or other handheld gaming console will feel totally at home.

The other thing is that you can hold a 7" device in both hands and type. on an ipad you have to place the tablet on a table or your lap to be able to type comfortably.

                          @ Umfriend >

i really prefer the 9700 over the Torch. better battery life and with OS 6 (the is a leaked beta for the 9700) it's faster. OS 6 seems to be doing a lot better on the non-touch BBs than on the Torch... go figure.

                          @ Elie >

I think RIM will hit a homerun with the new Playbook. It's running on a QNX kernel and should run QNX apps. additionally Android apps can be quickly and easily ported (developed with Adobe Air). It'll also run all BB OS6 apps; and the real kickers: it'll run FLASH and HTML5.

just the FLASH apps by themselves give the Playbook more apps than the iphone.

Rumor has it RIM will be releasing phones with the new QNX OS very soon.

LLC, the Torch has OS 6 as well, in fact, it is the first BB device with it AFAIK. I don't care for the touch bit and if I understand correclty, one can use a Torch as if it was not a touch-thing. Battery life, well, it'll be fine with a Torch as well.

The only thing I hate about it is that I'd have to walk with a heavier, lumpier device and not gain any pixels, so yeah, next March I'll be going 9700 and I hope by then they come with OS 6 by default.
