Last week the MoTown great had urgent surgery for an undisclosed illness, and she canceled her appearances through May, 2011. Today family members informed the Detroit media that the Queen of Soul has pancreatic cancer.

When I was in HS & college she was as big a star as they come. I loved going to services with my black classmates because we first had great soul food for breakfast, then we attended Rev. C. L. Franklin's church - her father. Every Sunday there she was in the choir, just as she had been since childhood, blasting the walls down with the sweetest Gospel music anywhere. Rev. Franklin could also deliver one helluva sermon.
Those certainly were the days.....
