Never read the books, did you? It wan't a dream and the slippers were silver, not ruby. Those were changed, and a lot omitted, in the 1939 film.

There were a bunch of Oz books by L. Frank Baum; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and The Wizard in Oz, The Road to Oz, The Emerald City of Oz, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, Tik-Tok of Oz, The Scarecrow of Oz, Rinkitink in Oz, The Lost Princess of Oz, The Tin Woodsman of Oz, The Magic of Oz and Glinda of Oz.

The 1985 film Return to Oz, starring Fairuza Balk as Dorothy, was based on the 2nd and 3rd Oz books; The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) and Ozma of Oz (1907.)

Have to admit, I never did read the books, though I was familiar with it not being a dream in them.

I vaguely remember Return to Oz. More recently (relatively speaking) I enjoyed the Tin Man mini-series take on the story of Dorothy and Oz.

She has always seemed like a witch to me. Good fit.
Most will rember her as the little bitch 'Jackie' on 'That 70's Show'.
Also did the voice of Meg on 'Family Guy' for a few years.

Looks fun.
I like that they use the b&w to color transition like the old movie.

Looks like the Depp Alice in WOnderland with a little more color and a male protagonist. Looks interesting though.
