I hope you NZ Murcers and families are safe.

The Christchurch earth quake looks to be NZ worst disaster ever.

I though Aus was having a bad run with multiple cyclones/floods and fires this summer, but this is horrific

Hi all.

It was two of them last Sept and Dec. This one made a real mess only about 3 miles down... 75 confirmed dead and about 300 missing. Wall to wall TV coverage.. The USGS is saying that this is an aftershock of last years September one..

How can an aftershock be delayed by that much?

Aftershocks can last decades. In fact, the New Madrid fault zone is still having aftershocks from the massive quakes there from 1811 - 1812.

Those four 7.0 to 8.1 quakes actually re-routed the Mississippi River by ~1-2 miles, rattled Chicago & Detroit, rang church bells in Boston and did damage in Washington D.C. and NYC.

Another New Madrid quake is overdue - at least a 6.0.
