  • Iran building missile base in Venezuela

TBM = theater ballistic missile = 300 to 3500 mile range
IRBM = intermediate range ballistic missile = 3500 to 5500 mile range

The Jerusalem Post is reporting on an article in Germany's Die Welt. Looks to be a TBM & IRBM base with silos, which would mean missiles could not only reach Venezuela's neighbors but eventually the southern US as well. This is also starting to be reported in other US sources.

Not good. This could be the straw that breaks the camels back.

    JP article....

Which goes hand in glove with this 2009 WSJ editorial by Walter M. Morganthau (D), retired NYC District Attorney and US Attorney (Federal prosecutor) for the southern district of NY....

That means two of the world's most dangerous regimes, the self-described "axis of unity," will be acting together in our backyard on the development of nuclear and missile technology. And it seems that terrorist groups have found the perfect operating ground for training and planning, and financing their activities through narco-trafficking.

The Iranian nuclear and long-range missile threats, and creeping Iranian influence in the Western Hemisphere, cannot be overlooked. My office and other law-enforcement agencies can help ensure that money laundering, terror financing, and sanctions violations are not ignored, and that criminals and the banks that aid Iran will be discovered and prosecuted. But U.S. law enforcement alone is not enough to counter the threat.

I'd do the same if I were Iran, given that the US is in my backyards as well (Iraq, Afghanistan) and has a hostile attitude towards me. Perhaps similar to the USSR placing missiles in Cuba as the US had some in Turkey.

You'll work it out I'm sure.

The 1950's era missiles we had in Turkey were outdated liquid fueled Thor's that were going to be decommissioned, removed, and not replaced within months and the Russians knew it, so using them as an excuse for Cuba was FUBAR.

As for Venezuela - this shows how nuts Chavez is because the US isn't the only well-armed state who wouldn't like this base being there, and many are far less restrained than we are.
