    Here it's 1.277 EUR for 100 (most switched from 98 to 100) and 1.264 EUR for 95.

    That's 6,83 and 6,76 USD per gallon.

I got my consumption to about 5,8 liters (40mpg) simply by driving 130-140km/h (80-87mph) on highway (drive mostly on highway) instead of 160-170 (99-106mph) (you get bogged down by trucks overtaking each other and you have to constantly floor it in 4th gear to accelerate back, and your average speed is bottlenecked at 140).

Diesel is 1,213 EUR/l or 6,49 USD/gal. Also the new diesels with particle filters use fuel to burn up particles once filter is clogged up and then consumption shoots up. You need to be doing a lot more kilometers/year for diesel to pay off. Otherwise generally one of best diesel engines is VW 1.9 TDI with 110hp which you can chip to about 130 and can be found in Audis A3 and A4, Golfs, Polo sedans and wagons and Skoda Octavias.

Fiat group 1.9 JTD is also quite nice, you can get it on Fiats, Alphas and even Saabs.

The problem with Chevrolet here is that it's made either in South Korea, Russia or maybe Kazakhstan, so this puts it kind of below French cars in the spot where Ladas used to be.
