I have many fond memories of the area formed by SLC, Moab, Grand Canyon, AZ to the MX border (I ate rattler in Sedona!), a night in Tuba City (no wine with my dinner), CA from SD>LA>Sequoia NP, Mojave (even did some work in China Lake), Death Valley (in a snowstorm and flash floods) and many places in between. Some overlap with your itinerary.
