    The .40 was never intended to be a target load

    It's popular because it generates nearly the same peak pressure wave in tissue (causing hydrostatic shock) as a standard .45 load (1,600+ psi vs 1,100-1,200 for a 9mm) but in a smaller pistol carrying many more rounds while being accurate enough. The higher above 1,000 psi you get for a ppw the higher the odds of brain damage from a torso impact.

    Hydrostatic shock is real - confirmed in the medical literature - and most trauma surgeons just roll their eyes when you mention either a .40 or .45.
