  • Issiz Adam

Just watched this movie, it rocks (better than any superhero movies I watched), so watch it if you can.

Alper is in his mid 30s and a good chef at his own restaurant. He loves luxury and spends his life with one-night stands and paid love. One day, his life changes utterly as he walks into a second-hand shop where he first encounters Ada who is in her late 20s and has a shop where she designs costumes for kids. She leads a modest life and one day while looking for a book, her and Alper's paths cross. Alper is fascinated by Ada's beauty and starts following her with the book she has been looking for. They both experience first signs of love, which they have never experienced before. Although Alper tries to fit Ada into his life, he realizes that this narrows his life down while on the other hand Ada has already fallen in love with him. 'Issiz Adam' portrays the life of those whose lives have been isolated by modern lifestyles. The film is also filled with food, mothers, old songs, and love.

Also I've been to Istanbul, so I can identify with some of the stuff (food, nice places, romance). Soundtrack is excellent.

Some similar themes, though more comedy and with a happy ending is Soul Kitchen (German, Turkish director), also watch it if you haven't.

I'm turning this into a non-mainstream-hollywood film recommendations thread...

I watched this next film in cinema yesterday, and was very impressed by it:

        La guerre est déclarée

You might also find it under the English title of 'Declaration of War'

          I recommend following:

          Listy do M.
          (Letters to saint Nicholas)
          Poland, Slovenian director
Great Christmas movie, stories of people with problems all intersect on Christmas day.

          Izlet
          (A trip)
Slovenia, won numerous awards, my brother is in this one
Three friends embark on a road trip like in high school, but things have changed - Gregor is going to war mission, Ziva is going to study abroad, while Andrej is still the same. There are secrets left unsaid. Can their friendship survive?

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War
          Korea
A drama about the fate of brothers forced to fight in the Korean War. One of great war movies.

            Battle Royale
            Batoru rowaiaru

In the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill each other under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.

Forty-two students, three days, one deserted Island: welcome to Battle Royale. A group of ninth-grade students from a Japanese high school have been forced by legislation to compete in a Battle Royale. The students are each given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent off to kill each other in a no-holds-barred (with a few minor rules) game to the death, which means that the students have three days to kill each other until one survives--or they all die

It is very interesting how various psychological profiles of people (psychopaths, people with integrity, naive people, masterminds) cope with mission to kill each other off and how friendships and relations are tested under extreme conditions they've been sheltered from by society.
