119 years ago today a 27 year old writer by the name of Arthur Conan Doyle published the first Sherlock Holmes story - A Study in Scarlet. This started a phenomenon that has seen numerous novels, stage plays, movies and TV series portraying the adventures of the master detective and his friend Dr. Watson.

A Study in Scarlet is still controversial in parts of the US because of its portrayal of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, the Mormons. Later Conan Doyle's daughter said "You know, father would be the first to admit that his first Sherlock Holmes novel was full of errors about the Mormons." Levi Edgar Young, a descendant of Brigham Young, wrote that Conan Doyle had apologized, but some school districts still restrict its use to older children.
