  • Fed v. Fed gunfight

    Well - Fed vs. Fed

Kinda goes with the problems they're having at FAMS (Federal Air Marshal Service) - bad enough that they're talking about reorganizing the service.

ICE agent shootout leaves 2 dead, 1 wounded in Long Beach

A confrontation between law enforcement agents erupted in gunfire Thursday evening at the federal building in Long Beach, leaving two dead and one seriously injured, authorities said.

The incident involved agents from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building along the city's oceanfront.

The shooter is believed to have opened fire on his supervisor over an unspecified dispute, law enforcement authorities told The Times.
As the supervisor lay wounded, another agent jumped in and tried to subdue the gunman. Another round of gunfire broke out, authorties said.

Officials were investigating whether the gunman turned his weapon on himself, the sources said. The extent of any wounds he may have suffered was not immediately clear.

The agent who died was shot at least once in the abdomen, authorities said.

They stressed that the situation was still unfolding and that investigators were trying to sort out what sparked the deadly confrontation.

Police and federal officers had swarmed the area and were gathering evidence Thursday evening. The shooting erupted on the seventh floor of the building.

No other details were immediately available.

    Questions:
Were air marshals introduced after 9/11?
What are standards for hiring them (I guess lower than regular police officers)?

This incident was between ICE officers - I just mentioned FAMS because of recent troubles in their units.

FAMS was founded by JFK in 1963 as the Sky Marshal program. It was expanded as part of FAA in 1968 because of skyjackings, then again by Reagan and again after 9/11 when it was folded into DHS. They train at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico - similar training to the US Marshal Service but with extras because of the air duties. Pretty intensiive.

I thought of scene from Anger Management when I heard of Air Marshals.

Not quite the picture of a person with intensive training.
