  • Using my UK iPad2 on 3G in the USA?

    Hi

Can anyone please tell me if/what I can do to obtain a microsim so I can use 3G on my iPad2 when I visit the SW USA at Easter? I'd be happy to put a few 10s of $ on a pre-paid SIM if that is an option.

It would be a bonus if it also worked along the coast of Mexico.

    Many thanks,

    Tony.

    This may help -

We’ve received a few questions from those outside of the USA asking if the iPad 2 3G model from the USA will work in their home country. The answer is generally yes, assuming your local cell …

Sounds like if it's GSM it's unlocked and just a matter of swapping in a local carriers micro-SIM.

It is unlocked, so I guess the question is really how do I get ahold of a suitable sim and what hoops will I have to jump through. It would be great if I can get it ahead of the visit as time is very limited.

      Cheers

You should be able to pick-up a prepaid SIM card easy enough, though I'm not sure about doing so ahead of time, unless you had someone state-side pick one up and ship it out.

Will depend on the 3G frequencies that your iPad runs on. UK cellular normally use 2100Meg with some 900Meg . The US AT&T use 850 and 1900Meg depending upon the region your in otherwize there is T-Mo (1700 and 2100 AWS so most likely a no no) so you will be running on edge not fast but usable.. Same will apply to AT&T if the iPad doesn't have their 3G bands.. Just hope no one is running GPRS data on GSM as it's slower than dialup.

Here are the specs from the UK Apple site:

            Wi-Fi + 3G model: UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

            So I should be ok.

            Many thanks,

            Tony.
