This is a very geeky picture of those of us of a certain age...
1. the ring tone itself will vary country to country and is not part of the spec., so has been omitted.
2. IIRC the number of rings before answering is configurable. As there is only a 2sec gap between dialling and response it may have picked up immediately?
This always on internet does take away a bit of the charm: the beeping and buzzing of the modem, the flickering lights on the black box, the anxiety on whether or not you'll get the connection, the anticipation, the sheer speed of V90 (well, my first modem was only 1200, and I frequently used mobile dialup at 9600).

That sounded like a challenge.. and I was bored at work... So I think: 15702340003.
Solution:
dtmf = dual tones... lowest frequency group is the row (1st row = lowest frequency), highest frequency group is the column (1st column = left) of the keys on the keypad. So you can see:
bottom frequencies = rows: 1 2 3 4 1 1 2 4 4 4 1
top frequencies = columns: 1 2 1 2 2 3 1 2 2 2 3
And then just combine...

And I fell for it... hook, line and sinker...
I just scrolled through some parts of the image, as we actually had to learn this whole protocol (on the exam, I had to explain the null modem cable and why it works), and just overlooked the number section. Still, no excuse... but good that I had the same answer...
