I learned the curse of our new house.
We sit in a wind tunnel on the block.
Everyone's snow from the opposite side of the street gets blown over here into drifts (neighbor gets it worse than I do).
That side of the street just lets it blow over here.
Clear it out over here, and the wind brings it right back in.
I Baja'd my jeep through a 3'+ drift in my driveway...12 hours later the tracks were gone gain.
Gonna be a while before the Challenger sees pavement again

I've had plows leave 3 foot x 30 foot snow dams overnight that froze into ice dams by morning. The only way out was to pass out woodsplitting mauls (5 lb axes) to everyone and chop the SOB out. Lotsa fun.

They do that here too....but they push it all to the middle of the road,,,never lived anywhere they did it like this.
Makes it impossible to pull out of your driveway and go left...but at least they don't burry us in...

Its gone very warm here for the moment.
We're on the leading edge of the storm thats bringing the North American continent cold, so we're getting a massive burst from the south of Europe/North Africa.
If the storm keeps going east, we'll get roughly the same weather on the flipside, just a tad warmer though probably.

That was disappointing. Last night it got cloudy and cold and the wind howled like crazy all night. Morning came bright and clear. No new snow. No new drifting because everything's frozen down. Current temp is 2F, wind chill warning still in effect.

edit around here the snow plows have snow gates that they can lower to block the snow from piling up in the driveways. They actually block about 50% of the snow from falling in the driveway, but it's better than nothing. Oddly enough, the director of public works was opposed to using snow gates and iirc there was a public vote on the matter.

edit edit they do love burying cars whose hapless owners have left parked on the street.

Got several more inches last night/today....and the winds piled up that friggin drift in front of my garage again.
Gonna have to look into planting some trees/shrubs next year to try to mitigate the drifts...

In these parts we have Snow Emergency declarations by cities. Cars parked on the street get a notice to move it out of yhe right of way by X time. If you don't it's a $50 ticket and likely a $150 tow. This clears things for the plows.

Can you get temporary snow femcing in your area? It's a roll of plastic fence ~3' high and 50-100' long you mount with metal stake posts along the driveway. Catches most of the snow before it drifts into the drive. Cheap, good for a few seasons. The stakes are put in with a tubular post hammer. Everything goes into the garage rafters after snow season.

I'm sure I could get some temp fencing...and I'm sure the neighbors would whine about it making the block look like a construction site...

                          Interestingly, -40°F = -40°C!

I can only partly image what it feels like: coldest I experienced was a -28°C, with windchill making it -35°C (-31°F).
Public transport solved it nicely: busses drove their routes, but stopped where you wanted them to stop (you could just hail them when you saw them, an indicate that you wanted to get off). Nobody cared that the ride to quite a bit longer.

Which also happens to be the freezing point of mercury, as near as dammit!

My dad when he was on a mission to the military base Alert felt some -45 -50C weather (not sure) but I do remember him saying that with the windchill it came to -65C. He said that even with THE best winter equipement, you cannot survive outside for more than 5 mins otherwise you'll freeze through and through or something like that. He said that the plane fuel was too cold to be useful, they had to wait until the storm was over or whatnot. He tells me these stories years later and yet as if it was no big deal at yet when he comes back from these crazy missions he has the nerve to tell me that it was just another day at the office. Nothing special happened. Sheesh!!

-25C with a -40C wind chill is as low as I've gone. Winter of 1985 when I was living outside of Chicago. My older brother and I went outside for about 30-45 in the warmest clothes we had before we had to go back inside. According to NOAA that's the record low for the Chicago area.
