At some point, everyone's heart will stop. For most, this is when they begin to die. Doctors succeed in very few cases at bringing the clinically dead back to life. However, more patients could be saved if medical professionals put existing knowledge about the treatment of cardiac arrest to better use, argues critical care physician Sam Parnia, 41, who is leading a revival of research in this field at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York.

She's a smart cookie there now. What next zombies?
Seriously, if the brain has lost oxygen supply and conversely CO2 expiration bring them back to life would be against hypocratic oath, do no harm. Sadly the medical establishment does that every minute of the day in other ways. When expert medical opinion is nothing more than a hypothosis eg a guess, you become the legal guinea pig, with long term effects lasting a lifetime. Ehhh what the hey?!"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -- Dr. Seuss

The Saulk Institute is also working on therapeutic hypothermia and other hibernation technologies.
The main focus is getting the chemistries, blood substitutes and induced hypothermia equipment into the hands of rescue squads. Even ice packs around the head and neck are useful. Once induced the brains O2 requirement is pretty much zero, allowing transport and repairs without near as much risk of oxygen starvation.
Working in parallel, NASA is actively working on hibernation pods for long space missions.
As usual, sci-fi eventually becomes reality.Last edited by Dr Mordrid; 14 February 2014, 03:01.Dr. Mordrid
