One good thing from all that Snow :

Seriously though, I LOVE the snow, and we're getting less and less of it here.
The flowers are starting to bud, and small white and purple flowers are flowering thru the garden lawn.

Anyone else having a 'different weather than usual' for this time of year ?

Here in Warsaw it is an unusually warm winter. No frost almost all the way up to Christmas, a bit of frost (downto around -10°) and snow in January, but nothing spectacular. Now, temperature has gone up already to 7-8°. However, the humidity is much higher than normal, and this surprises most people. They are used to a dry cold with a snow, now there is this humid cold with a lot of water and ice. A dry -10° is actually much more comfortable than a humid 0°, which also makes a difference for the road conditions (although those are managed nicely).

A friend in Granada told my they have the coldest winter in years over there.

The Caribbean is pumping alot of that moisture north following the jet stream. Very interesting perspective from my vantage point. In the summer (which is 8 months long here) it is not uncommon to start the day with a clear pictureque sky, that shortly will create a small fluffy white cumulus cloud directly above, that forms into a massive singular cumulonimbus that will dump a boat load of rain with massive lightning, anvil colapses and then dissipates completely two to three hours later exactly in the same spot it started from. With the anvil collapse they spread across/near the horizon, have seen them spread 60 miles across during this process. Evenings start out like early morning, Clear, with spectacular sunsets almost daily.

It snowed three straight days here in South Carolina. It has been well over a decade since this area got this much snow. Granted, it will all be melted by the end of the weekend.

Coldest night: -42°F wind chill, -14.5°F actual.

Last I heard ~86% of the Great Lakes is frozen over, and more freezing.

Every time we have more snow it's a new seasonal record.

There are 12-20+ foot piles of snow & ice in major parking lots due to plowing. Probably won't all melt until at least late April or May.

Water mains all over Detroit are bursting, some 15 inchers causing sinkholes and flooding streets with 2-3 FEET of ice. Even police cars stalled then stuck in ice up into their doors, requiring cops to be rescued by riding in the scoops of big John Deere front loaders.

I expect you get snow every year, no matter what, so you are readily prepared for the worst...

I think we are still in for a chance of some snow, but not until that large weather pattern thats giving you all the cold moves out of the way.
Thats whats giving us warm air from the equator/Africa, and mixing with cold weather over the UK.

If this is our Winter, I shudder to think what this summer will be like...

With little to no frost, its going to be a HUGE year for Bugs and Mosquitos and flies.
You might actually be luckier over in the US, and have less bugs generally this year.

I wonder if the Bees are going to be affected ?
There is already a shortage in the US, this can't be helping.

Over here there has been this debate about soft winters and bugs. AFAIK, the main opinion is that soft winters cause more birds to survive and be born and therefore less bugs during summer. Bugs eggs' and what not do rather well even during severe frost apparantly.

Last year winter for us was very moderate and everyone was warned to beware of the Gallinipper mosquito and other species would experience a population explosion.

I've experienced these mosquitos when stationed in Biloxi Miss. back in the early '80's. Damn scary, look you square in the eye and say, Your arse is mine! and run you down. Interesting that we had the least amount of mosquito's in years, the complete opposite of what the experts claimed would happen. On average I'm bitten 600 times a year, am an O+ mosquito magnet (they like this blood type in particular). In a normal year use at least a pint of 25% deet if not more. Last year was bit less than 30 times and used less than 6oz of 7% deet.
