  • DC/Warner films roadmap emerging

Batman & family films not included

If the list of Warner Bros. movie announcements planned for Comic-Con International is even half as long as Nikki Finke's sources indicate, DC Comics fans will likely leave Hall H next month very happy.

The Deadline founder launched her eponymous website today with a purported development slate that, while characterized as "in flux," certainly qualifies as ambitious:

    May 2016 Batman v Superman
    July 2016 Shazam
    Xmas 2016 Sandman
    May 2017 Justice League
    July 2017 Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 Man Of Steel 2

The date for "Batman v Superman" was, of course, already known, but Finke contends its move from July 2015 to May 2016 wasn't due to the script or the availability of Ben Affleck or Jesse Eisenberg, but rather because Warner Bros. needed to negotiate multi-picture deals with the actors who will make cameos as heroes like Cyborg, Aquaman, Green Lantern and The Flash before going on to appear in "Justice League" and, in some cases, their own movies.

Aside from the number and frequency of superhero films -- three each in 2016 and 2017 -- the rumored lineup contains several surprises, not the least of which is the timing of "Justice League," which initial reports indicated was unlikely to arrive before 2018.

It's just not as exciting as the Marvel lineup. I think BvS will make or break this DC lineup.

The Dark Knight Trilogy was great. I like Man of Steel, but overall the reception was warm, and not as huge as DC/TW wanted. If BvS doesn't kill at the box office, like near $1b worldwide, the DC movies are going to be in trouble.

I say this because that's how the Marvel lineup got momentum. You had huge successes in Iron Man and The Avengers, which allowed mediocre movies like Thor and Captain America to still be successful. And allowed us to forget the Hulk fiascoes (plural). Move to phase 2 and the movies get better, ticket sales go up, allows Marvel to take chances on something like Guardians of the Galaxy.

This DC lineup does not instill the same confidence.

From here on things WILL change because Legendary Pictures won't be doing the production. They are now with Universal, working on a resurrection of their classic horror stories.

Why they moved - a HUGE blowup over The Seventh Son, a Sorcerer's Apprentice type flick Warner refused to release. They also produced other underperformers (ex: Superman Returns) for Warner & may have been shown the door. Will this improve the adaptations due to better producers? Hopefully.
