The prequel to Star Wars is of course Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa who eventually got credited.

Also the force awakens borrows a shot from Triumph of the Will as did A New Hope.

Don't worry about it guys! (the "NOOOO!!!" just seemed at its place in this thread )

Looking at the original trilogy, apart from the weakness of Darth Vader (compared to the prequels), the combination of Han Solo and Leia is just fantastic. The dialogues, the looks they give each other, simple one liners delivered in such a natural way. It does not look like acting and feels less artificial than in many current movies. The special effects also stand out, but in positive sense: the lack of CGI makes everything heavier and more realistic (adhering to physics) - worst are the laser blast effects. Finally, the colours are less bright, which probably was done to mask special effects, but it adds to everything. The prequels in comparison are much to vivid in colour... Just my opinions here...
So how does The Force Awakens compares to this?

I'm pretty sure they've all but publicly confirmed Ford for the cast in the next one. Maybe in flash backs?

Visually Force Awakens is great and much closer to original trilogy.

As I think I said, IMO, it is better than ANH (but it is not that hard to do that).

Just yesterday watched episode 6... It is really surprising how simplistic some of the plans of both rebels and empire were, and how stupidly executed...

After having rewatched all of them, I would say episode 4 is the best, so if the new one compares to that, it does not seem bad...

as others said, *the spoilered one" is listed for the next movie, so you can't be that sure that he really is dead. Flashbacks seems most plausible but who knows what will happen. Luke also falls down that big shaft in Calrissian-City (dunno remember the real name or if it was Episode 5 or 6) and survived it.

And by the way Benicio del Toro plays a villain in the next movie ... Source is one of those official casting web sites

Returning to reprise their roles in “Star Wars: Episode VIII” is Golden Globe Award nominee Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron; Daisy Ridley as Rey; Black Reel Awards nominee John Boyega as Finn; Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford as Han Solo; two-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Carrie Fisher as Leia; three-time Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma; and BAFTA Award winner Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. Also joining the cast of “Star Wars: Episode VIII” is BAFTA Award nominee Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, who will play the role of a villain.
