Take a look at this video, it shows how the real 3D printers work:

and here is how to scan things:

If I could afford one I'd be all over this. Maybe in a few more generations I can afford one for my work.

Ok, that explains a lot. Their printer lays down a layer of powder, then runs over it with an inkjet printer-like mechanism to inject glue and colour at only the correct locations. The excess powder is then vacuumed up and I assume can be recycled.

The powder acts as a support structure to allow for complex shapes at higher layers.

300 dpi! That's a really fine layer of powder. Any idea what this power could be made of?

This doesn't seem like it would be that hard to reproduce.

Anyone know how much the z corp 3D printers sell for?

I think the higher spec model is 600dpi! I noticed they glossed over the vacuuming in the video, and they guy seemed to be handling the model very delicately.

I'm not knocking it, this is cool stuff!

this is so cool. this could literally be the future of consumerism.

if the tech develops far enough to be able to make real devices (not just prototypes) with many different kinds of materials everyone could have one in their house and then instead of going to the mall you would find the item you want on the internet, pay the company who designed it for the design, they would send the DRM'd design to your device, and it would make one for you.

I've got some great aps for these things, and the way the automotive industry is going in NA , I may need to seriously look at a new company focus.
These things will also print out completely usuable molds for casting aluminum!
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!
