  • NYTimes 2 Gore: cut GW hype

    Mr. Gore seems to have overplayed his hand....this from the New York Times, the "paper of record" and one of the most left-wing in the US;

    Article....

    >
..part of his scientific audience is uneasy. In talks, articles and blog entries that have appeared since his film and accompanying book came out last year, these scientists argue that some of Mr. Gore’s central points are exaggerated and erroneous. They are alarmed, some say, at what they call his alarmism.

“I don’t want to pick on Al Gore,” Don J. Easterbrook, an emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University, told hundreds of experts at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. “But there are a lot of inaccuracies in the statements we are seeing, and we have to temper that with real data.”
    >
Although Mr. Gore is not a scientist, he does rely heavily on the authority of science in “An Inconvenient Truth,” which is why scientists are sensitive to its details and claims.

Criticisms of Mr. Gore have come not only from conservative groups and prominent skeptics of catastrophic warming, but also from rank-and-file scientists like Dr. Easterbook, who told his peers that he had no political ax to grind. A few see natural variation as more central to global warming than heat-trapping gases. Many appear to occupy a middle ground in the climate debate, seeing human activity as a serious threat but challenging what they call the extremism of both skeptics and zealots.

Kevin Vranes, a climatologist at the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Colorado, said he sensed a growing backlash against exaggeration. While praising Mr. Gore for “getting the message out,” Dr. Vranes questioned whether his presentations were “overselling our certainty about knowing the future.”
    >
In October, Dr. Easterbrook made similar points at the geological society meeting in Philadelphia. He hotly disputed Mr. Gore’s claim that “our civilization has never experienced any environmental shift remotely similar to this” threatened change.

Nonsense, Dr. Easterbrook told the crowded session. He flashed a slide that showed temperature trends for the past 15,000 years. It highlighted 10 large swings, including the medieval warm period. These shifts, he said, were up to “20 times greater than the warming in the past century.”

Getting personal, he mocked Mr. Gore’s assertion that scientists agreed on global warming except those industry had corrupted. “I’ve never been paid a nickel by an oil company,” Dr. Easterbrook told the group. “And I’m not a Republican.”

Biologists, too, have gotten into the act. In January, Paul Reiter, an active skeptic of global warming’s effects and director of the insects and infectious diseases unit of the Pasteur Institute in Paris, faulted Mr. Gore for his portrayal of global warming as spreading malaria.

“For 12 years, my colleagues and I have protested against the unsubstantiated claims,” Dr. Reiter wrote in The International Herald Tribune. “We have done the studies and challenged the alarmists, but they continue to ignore the facts.”

I applaud this sort of rationality. While we are undoubtedly doing bad things to the planet, it seems that environMENTALists have chosen to adopt the tactic of "scare them into action". I'm sure they sat down and thought about it, knowing full well the kind of social and psychic backlash that would create.

They're essentially the annoying kid who yells "YOU'RE GONNA GET HURT! YOU'RE GONNA GET HURT!". You know he's right, or that he could be right, but you kick him in the balls and go back to what you were doing ANYWAY, just because he's annoying.

No need to apologise. I have zero respect for Gore, who is politician through and through, as I've stated on many occasions. He is on a bandwagon and I suspect that his motive is clear - and it's nothing to do with the environment: bye, Hillary!

We don't need him to get rid of Hillary if the grownups choose the nominee. With her 40+ percent "I'll NEVER vote for her!!" numbers, which includes a lot of Democrats, she has little chance in a general election.

What astounds me is that she's still running... or at least making a SHOW of running. Point in fact is she DOES have the 40+% that will NEVER vote for her (myself included), which is pretty much DEATH to any candidacy. The least couple elections have been highly divisive, split 50/50 down the middle, but the "not even if there was nobody else running" numbers on both candidates have been MUCH lower.

But with Hillary? It's either "hmm, dunno might vote for Obama might vote for Hillary" or it's "OVER MY DEAD BODY". Not a great way to win elections. I wonder if she's stupid and doesn't know she's going to lose, or making a show of it (either to save face or to set the groundwork for a later bid)?

Then there is the fact that far more people will show up to vote against someone than for someone, which would strongly enhance that 40%.

Yeah, she's pretty well screwed for this election, which again makes me ask... why is she still running? Every time she gets up and talks she makes herself look dumber than she is (the one thing I don't accuse her of is being stupid!), it costs a TON of money to run... what motivation does she have when she KNOWS she won't win?

Having spent a lot of time around a lot of elected officials I can tell you that she may not know that.
I takes a nearly psychotic amount of self confidence to run for office. Those not self deluded need not apply.

And that self confidence gets reinforced. One of them wins each and every time.

I don't much understand her high negatives, but they are there and hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

Also, she is moderate, and the left is pretty fired up this time, so she is bracketed on both sides.

                  Hillary is a moderate?!?!

OMG... I'm not sure what to say. If she convinced you that she is a moderate, then she has a better chance of winning than people here think... that is exactly her strategy, to hide her extreme left socialist views and try to come across as a moderate.

Oh, I suppose you could say "She's not a moderate and these are some of her views that prove it..."

Or you could point to aspects of her voting record as a Senator.

Doesn't sound that hard to me, if she's not.

She has moderated her voting record in order to fool you and get herself back in the White House, because she's a left-wing freak of nature (not to mention a lesbian, and I just don't see the country being ready for its first gay president!).

haven't been keeping up with US politics that much... who seems to be the frontrunners? Will it be Obama (dem) and McCain (rep)? (at least thats who I'd like to see)

While schmo is right in that it's very early the fact is thar due to the way the primaries are scheduled it'll all be settled by Feb. of this year, a full 5 months before the party conventions.

As such the usual 'clock' is running way ahead of schedule.

                              The polls have;

Dems: Obama ahead of Clinton and she's sinking. She'll drop again this week because she dropped the old "vast right wing conspiracy" line from the Lowinsky days this weekend. Reminding everyone of Bill's foibles isn't a smart thing to do.

Perhaps the best candidate the Dems have for the general election is Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico. He started his career as a 7 term congressman. Later he served as Clinton's energy secretary and UN Ambassador before being elected Governor in 2002. He's also Hispanic.

Politically he's an economic conservative and pro-tech; actively seeking a Virgin Galactic spaceport, cutting taxes etc. He's also been nominated four times for the Nobel Peace Prize (1995, 1997, 2000 & 2001) for negotiating the release of hostages in North Korea, Iraq, and Cuba.

Possible spoiler is Ralph Nader. If he runs as an 3rd party candidate the Dems are screwed, especially if Hillary is running, and it sounds like he will.

He's the only Dem in the hunt I'd consider voting for.

Reps: Guliani is pulling away from McCain who is also sinking. Bad move on McCain's part not attending 4 meetings of conservatives. Mitt Romney would be a good fall back or VP nominee, but there's the question of anti-Mormon discrimination on the part of voters.

Possible spoiler is the very popular former Senator Fred Dalton Thompson, a true blue Reaganite. He replaced Al Gore as Senator from Tennessee, serving until 2002 when he didn't run due to the death of his daughter. If the others falter expect him to announce this summer/fall.

Most don't know he was an assistant U.S. Attorney. He was also co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee and responsible for Sen. Howard Baker asking "What did the President know, and when did he know it?". He himself extracted from Alex Butterfield the existence of the Nixon Tapes; "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?".

He is folksy but one tough character who is not fun to debate, chewing up the unprepared up like a car shredder.

You know him as the gruff head DA Arthur Branch on Law & Order and captain of the carrier in Hunt for Red October. Yup; he has a second career as an actor, the first time in a docudrama about an incident he had prosecuted. The producer couldn't find anyone better to play him but him.
