  • Antidepressant study

Shows that in general, antidepressants have no better affects on patients with 'mild to moderate' depression than placebos.

More significantly, it has demonstrated that the medical companies peddling this stuff have suppressed evidence of this. Many trials remain unpublished.

A different, US study (also on FDA approved drugs)

CBT appears to have a much, much higher sucess rate, however, it is not generating income for the pharma industry...
Alternatively, telling a sufferer to 'snap out of it' appears to be every bit as effective as prozac...

I'm not surprised... the pharma industry is so bent into pushing their products and giving away "samples" and crap that its absurd. They even try to push doctors into prescribing their medications.

Its unfortunate that the first reaction nowadays is to go get some pills instead of dealing with problems.

Especially when studies I've seen say that regular sex, in any of its numerous forms, is at least as effective for most people. Hard to be "depressed" when you have a smile on your face

Over here there is currently a starting debate on whether psychologists should be allowed (after education & certification) to prescribe (certain) drugs, currently the prerogative of psychiatrists. I'm undecided on this issue. I can certainly see the pshycologists' case but I fear a steep increase in prescriptions.
