  • Finally: Platypus genome

The duck-billed platypus: part bird, part reptile, part mammal -- and the genome to prove it. An international consortium of scientists, led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has decoded the genome of the platypus, showing that the animal's peculiar mix of features is reflected in its DNA. An analysis of the genome, published today in the journal Nature, can help scientists piece together a more complete picture of the evolution of all mammals, including humans.

It's DNA is just as weird as it's appearance

I'm intrigued...how exactly do you manage to close your nostrils and ears?

        My thoughts exactly...

I first misread this more strange than it is... I read: "It swims with its eyes, (very long pause) ears and nostrils closed".

The do close there ears and nostrils, as they spend most of there time snuffling amongst rocks/pebbles etc at the bottom of streams looking for food, eg yabbies(small fresh water crayfish)..etc

The little fellas thrash around very energetically underwater with their beaver tail so they do need the protect there eyes, nostrils and ears.

There bill is a very sensitive bit of gear so they don't need any other senses underwater.

They are the coolest creatures to watch in action.
