I'm moving this thread to Science & Military so it doesn't bubble down too quickly.
The limiting factor being that a major component of the glass (titanium) is a bear to produce from ore. That said it'll find a LOT of applications in specialized products.Dr. Mordrid

I am sick of scratching my glasses, and for the other kind of glassees it would be cool to have beer glasses that are "drunk proof"
That said ST-TOS Scotty's 'transparent aluminum' has become real in the form of aluminum oxynitride (ALON), a very very tough transparent ceramic that melts at 2140C that's finding its way into armor, armored vehicle windows, sensors and soon consumer products. Also being considered as a replacement for sapphire in instrumentation windows & semiconductor production at half the weight/thickness and it can be formed into more complex shapes.Last edited by Dr Mordrid; 20 March 2009, 03:24.Dr. Mordrid
