    Why the thumbs down? It's a brilliant idea for surveillance. Shame we didn't think of it first??

      We did...a couple of snakebots (actually: biomorphic hyper-redundant robot) have been in development here for almost a decade. Besides surveillance they're also being developed for use in rescue work and by NASA on space missions. There are also snakebots being developed for use during surgeries - the 'bot crawls along the circulatory system until it gets to the heart where it can do repairs without huge incisions. In animal testing in Pennsylvania right now.
