        There's quite a discussion going on about the use of robotic arms like this or those being built as prosthetics as arms on rovers combined with HD stereoscopic remote vision. The prosthetic ones have the advantage of senses - touch, pressure etc. One allows users, either local (amputee) or remote (astronaut in orbit doing realtime manipulation), to tell texture differences as fine as differing grades of sandpaper. The sensor pads are similar to a thick finger cot.

        Missions: Mercury, Venus, Ceres, Vesta, near earth objects, large asteroids, Phobos, etc. etc.

        Advantage: no on-object habitat, life support, manned rover, lander, return vehicle (if not the lander) etc. plus it'll be safer for the crew.

        Also a saving in training. Learning how to use remote manipulators is hard (I know...gawd...) but everyone knows how to use their arms. Wire the astronaut up as they're doing with amputees (skin pads sensing nerve impulses and muscle contractions) and the rover arm would follow the motion of the user. Add VR goggle tied into the rovers stereo cameras and it's like being there.
