  • British snipers at it again

The sniper is without doubt the most feared combatant in any theater of war, the best of whom have an array of skills far beyond simply being able to hit human targets at a distance. Snipers are the most cost effective way of killing the enemy.

Three consecutive hits at 2.47 km (1.53 miles). Two Taliban targets and the third was the gun they were carrying. The Brits must have one hell of a sniper school.

It is amazing... he must have some skills!
It must be scary as hell to be on the other side though: suddenly you mate get shot, and you haven't got a clue where it came from...

I read that the bullet took several seconds to travel to the target... It made me wonder: is there a distance at which distance it would no longer be letal (or would it het the ground first). I know Mythbusters verified the physics law that a bullet shot out of a gun (horizontally) hits the ground as fast a bullet dropped.

In theory, at some point the friction caused by air would slow the bullet so much it would not be lethal. But that depends on angle fired, distance traveled, weight and spin on the bullet, the amount of powder energy, and length/rifling of the barrel. The effective range of the sniper gun used is rated at 1400m, obviously the lethal range, with a lot of luck and perfect conditions, is longer.

There was another mythbusters ep were they fired bullets straight up. Here are the results:

Bullets fired into the air maintain their lethal capability when they eventually fall back down.

      busted / plausible / confirmed

In the case of a bullet fired at a precisely vertical angle (something extremely difficult for a human being to duplicate), the bullet would tumble, lose its spin, and fall at a much slower speed due to terminal velocity and is therefore rendered less than lethal on impact. However, if a bullet is fired upward at a non-vertical angle (a far more probable possibility), it will maintain its spin and will reach a high enough speed to be lethal on impact. Because of this potentiality, firing a gun into the air is illegal in most states, and even in the states that it is legal, it is not recommended by the police. Also the MythBusters were able to identify two people who had been injured by falling bullets, one of them fatally injured. To date, this is the only myth to receive all three ratings at the same time.

The .408 CheyTac Intervention LRRS (Long Range Rifle System), based on the EDM Arms Windrunner, includes their tactical computer, Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X scope, and Kestrel 4000 wind/temperature/atmospheric pressure sensors, all linked to the PDA. This combination extends the range considerably; CheyTac papers state that it's capable of sub-MOA (minute of angle) accuracy at up to 2,300 meters.
