We've got a few Dell laptops here at work (everything else is custom built by myself) and they run pretty damn well. So no complaints from me there. However I doubt I would ever buy a desktop/workstation or server from them unless it was specifically required, for two reasons: 1) I can build them for a good bit cheaper and 2) get exactly what I want/need in them instead of what Dell thinks I want/need.
Anyhow I haven't had any bad experiences with Dell, so I can't really bash them except for saying that they don't really seem to be doing anything to improve the state of PC's (although those Axim Pocket PC's are rather nice and a lot more affordable than other models from HPaq).“And, remember: there's no 'I' in 'irony'†~ Merlin MannComment

If I had the money, I'd really, really think about a mac. The whole approach seems better to me.
Only a few problems:
Few games (have no time for them anymore anyway)
No Opera (that's hard!)
Less Free- and Shareware (though there seems to be less demand for that stuff, too, 'cause it works better out of the box).

Dells are really quite good in the business desktop market. Pretty reliable, and dead silent. They don't have screaming performance by any means, nor do they have many whizbang options, but they certainly do the job in a work environment (no games, or anything 3D really).
I don't have much experience with their laptops, but I do know that their servers suck donkey. Hard.

As far as prefabs - I recommend Dell above most others.
Also recoomend them to the computer disfunctional - if you have a problem call THEM, not ME .

Az, given that OS X is based on BSD, there are an increasing amount of free and shareware software titles available. Not to mention that they are already a strong variety of small developers that produce some pretty good free/cheap software (this has been true for a long time now).

You can either switch to Classic or use any number of custom themes. For that matter I've seen some Windows systems that look a hell a lot like OS X. Of course I know what you mean, OS X just has an out of the box classy, polished look that Windows doesn't.

ay... best thing to do is build your own ..... al though once in the highend workastaion market things can get tricky.. but i would still like to have it built acording to my specs (if i am not doing it) or else they can sod off...

When I upgrade my case I transfer the original IBM PC badge to the new case.
