    Not Carpathians. Much, much older...somehow

OK, bad guess!! The mountains are obviously oldish, possibly Jurassic limestone? It would seem they are in Europe. Am I correct with ex-Warsaw Pact? Am not very familiar with the geology of that region, but I would guess they are at least 2000 m high from the vegetation, unless they are fairly well North. How about, as another guess, the Urals?

Caledonian orogenesis. Yes, ex-Warsaw Pact. At no point they reach 2000 meters, the place with the lake is not much over 1000. Nope, not Urals.

Could it be Góry Świętokrzyskie with a Benedictine monastery on the highest peak?

Are you sure the origeny isn't Hercynian, rather than Caledonian? If so, my next suggestion would be the Bohemian massif. Certainly, from what I can see, the topography would fit that kind of formation (the same as the Black Forest I mentioned earlier)??? As far I can make out, I can't find any other Caledonian origeny in E. Europe than Holy Cross.

Also hercynian. Around the border of the massif.

Is this indeed in Europe or the Asian part of the former USSR?

Where did you answer this? You only specified ex-Warsaw Pact.

Answer to this question also have been posted :>

(OK, I'll be mercifull : Tatra Mountains are too young; and generally too high)

edit: (and also I ruled out Carpathians after all...)
