OK, a slightly different one, this time. This dog comes from a small region somewhere in the world. What is the name of the region?

I used to own one and, even 30 years after he died, I still miss him. He was a fantastic beast and, by far the most intelligent dog I've ever had.

This is a rehashed photo of Bonzo, taken 2 years before he died at the age of 14.

Very warm, but not quite there. The Great Swiss Mountain Dog does not have the curled up tail and is larger than this one, but I agree that the general appearance is similar. However, the Great Swiss should not be confused with the Bernese Mountain Dog, which is similar but has a long-haired coat and which, IMHO, is one of the most beautiful dogs in the world.

To find Bonzo's origin, you have to go quite a bit east from the Canton of Berne! That should give it away!

No, you're still very hot, but you haven't quite got it. The Entlebucher has much shorter legs than Bonzo and it has a very short tail (natural, not docked). This makes them extremely powerful animals, but the proportions somehow look a little odd.

You'll have to still go eastwards and you cannot really go wrong now, as there is only one Sennenhund breed left!

Yes, the location was the half-cantons of the two Appenzells. These are very rural areas of East Switzerland, noted for its dogs, which are used for droving the dairy cattle used for making Appenzell cheese (delicious semi-hard) and for hauling a cart with the milk churns to the cheese factory. It is also noted for its inhabitants being very small (many jokes), for a unique style of primitive art depicting rural scenes, for embroidery and some folk customs not found elsewhere. The two Appenzells also have the Landsgemeinde, the only true democracy still left in the world. The citizens flock to the central square of the capital cities and vote by a show of hands for both elections and political decisions (referenda and initiatives). The men wear swords to do so, as a sign of their eligibility (women were given voting rights only a few years ago under extreme federal pressure!). The negative side is that, although tourists are welcome to spend money, you have to live there for at least 10 generations to be part of the community!

                    Edit: photo of a Landsgemeinde:
