Well, you may have noticed my technique is slightly different from KvH's. I look at the pic first and try to deduce as much as poss from it, then narrow down the scope with guesses (and others' mistakes!), until I feel I have sufficient info to start Googling. If I don't see tha answer in 2 or 3 minutes, I give up until I have more info. E.g., for your last one, I doubt whether I spent more than about 5 minutes altogether Googling (which was also why I didn't respond in a few days, as I had no new info I could work on) .

Not really much different from the way I do it.. except that was difficult to deduce from the pic. From the desert-type flora I was thinking Iran or Caucasus to begin with..

Besides, the key was that I was too lazy to look through all the Kuriles at first, then you went and narrowed it down to the Northern Kuriles while I was asleep and Brian was awake.

That's a lot like what I do, especially when stumped. I've often let it be narrowed down and romped on it

I knew that pic would be a big stumper. It's amazing how different the views are, depending on which side you are looking from.
