      OK, clue coming up. It is on an island offshore from Africa. I thought it was easy because I believed this method of viticulture was fairly well-known - maybe I was wrong. Sorry!

                        Yes, Lanzarote has young volcanic dust as top soil and is subject to high winds. The walls are built to shelter a funnel-shaped hole dug in the dust, with the vine planted in the centre, so that moisture is funnelled down to the roots with minimal evaporation.
