The bronze lions were cast from captured French cannons at the battle of Trafalgar.
New clue: Who was emperor of the "First French Empire" at the time of the battle of Trafalgar, and more important for this matter, where did he die? Now it should be easy

OK, you may find this easy if you know the place but hellishly difficult otherwise, so I'll give 2 clues:
1. The building bottom centre is a well-known hotel with a view (and some hellish man-eating mosquitoes when I stayed there)
