Nope, it was in service from 13 November 1902 to 16 April 1941, when the back of the building was destroyed in the blitz. Its façade was intact, as you can see from the photo and it was preserved. From 1854 until 1902, another nearby building, still in daily use by the public, was used for the same purpose.

Yes, it was a railway station specifically to carry corpses and mourners to a cemetery outside the city. It had three classes of service. First class entitled the mourners to a private waiting room, second class to a partitioned one and third class to a communal one. The coffins were also entitled to special purpose-built carriages for each class. The places for the coffins were sold on a one-way, but the mourners were sold only return tickets.

The doorway you see is to allow two horse-drawn hearses to unload their cargos side-by-side. The coffins were placed in a lift which took them straight to the railway platform under the building.

The company operating the service was the London Necropolis Co. Ltd.
