    Let's talk about Supervolcanoes...

Nice subject. So what do you suppose the best strategy would be to survive this?

Depends on the severity. "Super" as they describe it, good luck. 40 Degree weather change? That would make the desert I live it rather cold in the winter.

to quote a famous movie line:

      "run away, run away"

Just saw an episode regarding the yellowstone super-volcano.
Scary stuff, but most experts agree that it doesn't look like it will erupt in the 'near' future (ie not in our lifetime)
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

They just say that to keep the population sane. Secretly though, they are all figuring out how to colonize the Moon before the big fireworks show.

I wonder how fast one could scramble a space launch as soon as they as soon as they got word that a super volcano is about to erupt? I wonder how much time you have from the moment you know that it's about to erupt till the point of eruption?

            B'ah!

Best bet, have one standing by all fuelled up and ready to launch on a moments notice. (make sure your at the facility and ready at any given moment, you know? just in case)

Otherwise, find the nearest girl and do her good. (might as well make your last moment on earth your best)

Edit: Maybe you could survive on earth if there was some sort of underground city like Zion.

Yes, somewhere warmer.. near the equator, maybe. You could buy Kauai and put a big glass dome over it.. have some caverns where you and your selected fellow humans could happily survive while everything else goes to hell. The island would help shield you from roving bands of crazed bizarros who would probably be roaming the continents looking for prey.

La Garita caldera laughts at the pitiful examples of "large" eruptions.

600000 years sounds really short to me. It seems like a lot more pressure needs to be built up for an explosion that large.

There was a bulge forming at a cool wilderness area in Oregon and I figured I should go visit there before it blows up or something, but apparently it has subsided...

Anyways, big boom = we're screwed.

Pure journalistic speculation. Twaddle! No one knows the magnitude or effects or whether it will happen. Many volcanos explode massively, threaten for some time then die down slowly over the millennia.

I have a more serious question: what makes man always look for the doomsday scenario? Is it a distorted form of Selbst-Schadenfreude (oxymoron!)?

If you can find a doomsday scenario you may be able to avoid it

Lets not talk about journalistic speculation, you do realise the article was from rotten dot com, the bastion of jounalistic integrity that it is.

But still I don't want to live near and super-duper volanco anyways

I saw a special about this on the discovery channel recently. It was a movie showing a simulation of what would happen if the Yellowstone caldera went. In that scenario, a series of moderate eruptions chained together and collapsed the yellowstone caldera, which is essentially most of the geothermal and geyser park area. Instead of a super explosion, they had a long sustained eruption with large amounts of ash and debris being thrown into the atmosphere. Due to the size of it, thats probably more likely than a super eruption that would flatten the entire area. However, a longer sustained eruption with large amounts of ash would also be worse on a global scale due to the amount of crap thrown into the atmosphere.

can't we just do what we do in every disaster movie where something threatens the earth?

                              Nuke the volcano!
