I wonder how fast one could scramble a space launch as soon as they as soon as they got word that a super volcano is about to erupt? I wonder how much time you have from the moment you know that it's about to erupt till the point of eruption?

Best bet, have one standing by all fuelled up and ready to launch on a moments notice. (make sure your at the facility and ready at any given moment, you know? just in case)

Yes, somewhere warmer.. near the equator, maybe. You could buy Kauai and put a big glass dome over it.. have some caverns where you and your selected fellow humans could happily survive while everything else goes to hell. The island would help shield you from roving bands of crazed bizarros who would probably be roaming the continents looking for prey.

600000 years sounds really short to me. It seems like a lot more pressure needs to be built up for an explosion that large.

There was a bulge forming at a cool wilderness area in Oregon and I figured I should go visit there before it blows up or something, but apparently it has subsided...

I saw a special about this on the discovery channel recently. It was a movie showing a simulation of what would happen if the Yellowstone caldera went. In that scenario, a series of moderate eruptions chained together and collapsed the yellowstone caldera, which is essentially most of the geothermal and geyser park area. Instead of a super explosion, they had a long sustained eruption with large amounts of ash and debris being thrown into the atmosphere. Due to the size of it, thats probably more likely than a super eruption that would flatten the entire area. However, a longer sustained eruption with large amounts of ash would also be worse on a global scale due to the amount of crap thrown into the atmosphere.
