Christmas actually took a while to take hold and become the more popular of the holidays among Christians. It wasn't until the Middle Ages that Christmas and related holidays began to resemble their modern form (in terms of when).

Of course Christmas has had a long history of controversy and falling in and out of prominence, so what people think is occurring now is hardly new or even worthy of note.

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

In my part of the sunburnt country, 'under the weather' usually equals 'hang over the size of a small planet'

The only option that I would add is a time where family gets together. That's what I generally look forward to most of all.

Same here except I like the rest of my family getting together in one place and me being elsewhere.

Hehe, not quite what I meant. Well then, it's time for you to makeup with your family - I'm sure they have some redeeming qualities

For me christmas is a family holiday, I would say THE family holiday. On the other hand christmas nowadays is commercial exploitation, too, which is sad of course. I know about the religious meaning of christmas but for me as a non-religious person being together with the family is the most important thing.

I'd like to amend my answer...

Christmas is paper cuts, long lines at the post office, fun on the roof, and shocking yourself on a broken bulb because the exposed wires jab into your thumb :P

Oh and, wishing you could have faraway friends and family closer.
