Small discussion with my colleagues. How do you pronounce the word "router".

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar. -
If you mean the person who points out the way or who plans the layout of an electronic circuit or similar, then the UK pronunciation is root-er
If you mean the tool that cuts a groove or profiles a lamina, then it is rowt-er.
The difference is etymological. The first is derived from route, pronounced root. The second is derived from rout, pronounced rowt.
For some unknown reason, I believe the US pronunciation for both route and rout is the same, but this is a regional quirk.Brian (the devil incarnate)

With Brian on this. Assuming you mean the thing that sits between your modem and your network, then it's derived from route, so whatever is consistent with your pronouciation of that. Roo-ter in my case Aussies and Kiwis at work say rowt-er though

If you are talking about the piece of networking equipment the American-Engrish pronunciation is: rau-ter (r-ow (as in getting hurt and saying "OW!")-ter)
Say it any other way to a network or It guy and you'll get funny looks.

Most folks who come from Cisco in the States to offer courses here, call them rou-ter.Comment

When I'm woodworking its r-OW-ter (OW as in ouch) 'cos I learned about those from Norm, Master Carpenter with his New Yankee Workshop accent Great tools, dangerous in the wrong hands.

ROW-ter here in the upper midwestern US (Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana etc.). We would also pronounce 'route' (as in a highway) as ROW-te. The tool would also be called a ROW-ter.Originally posted by Elie View Post
