What's wrong with calling GIFs jiffs? It's much quicker. How do you pronounce www? JPG? (Jay-peg or jay-pee-gee?) http://?

Yup, most people do. But there's this contingent that insists that the G is soft. Like "gentle" or "geronimo" or "gigolo".The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

That contingent just happens to include the inventors of the format
Then again, I've always pronounced it like 'gift' and there's only been one person I've run into that used that 'jif' pronunciation.“And, remember: there's no 'I' in 'irony'†~ Merlin Mann

Wasn't GIF something like Graphics Interchange Format, so its a hard G from Graphics.
We've had convo's about www before. My favourite was 'weeweewee' but of course I can't use it. I tend to us 'dubya dubya dubya' when the audiences knows precisely what I mean.
And its 'aitch tee tee pee colon forwardslash (thats the one on the right, no, on the right) forwardslash again'

That's the logical assumption, but programmers are sometimes less than logical when naming things. It was supposed to reference peanut butter, hence the 'JIF' pronunciation. There was even a GIF viewing/manipulation program called 'GIFFY'.Originally posted by Fat Tone View PostWasn't GIF something like Graphics Interchange Format, so its a hard G from Graphics.
The fact that most people pronounce it with a hard G negates any intended pronunciation the inventors had in mind.“And, remember: there's no 'I' in 'irony'†~ Merlin Mann

Click on the red speaker icon next to the main entry. That's pretty much how the IT world in the US pronounces it.“Inside every sane person there’s a madman struggling to get outâ€
