Sorry, couldn't find galeon or galeon is already installed
(or try to run `apt-get clean')

Galeon wasn't installed, I removed it before trying this. Bluefish worked great, that compiled without a hitch.

Then there was mozilla and evolution.

    Mozilla said;

-----> Installing build dependencies (for mozilla) <-----
    Reading Package Lists... Done
    Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Build-Depends dependency for mozilla cannot be satisfied because no available versions of package libjpeg-dev can satisfy version requirements
Error while installing build dependencies, stopped.

and Evolution said the exact same about libpam-dev. libjpeg62-dev is installed and didn't check libpam-dev. But that's quite annoying...

And I thought you said it was for the masses. I can't see Joe public who can't even understand how to empty the recycle bin trying this.

sorry let me rephrase that, for *nix flavours, RH = standard. windoz is still the prefered option for desktop here.

Actually if you go into a pc shop to buy a pc, they ask to you want a Mac or a Windows pc...

sigh, I used to teach server admins (english) that didn't even know what an agp slot was...
      Juu nin to iro

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

Who said Debian is for the masses?

Debian (the standard debian, not any of the commercial debians) is definitely NOT for the masses. On the other hand, RH9, MDK9.1, SuSE 8.2, Lindows 3.0, Xandros 1.0, etc, those are the ones for the masses. Debian has never been geared towards that. And besides I was trying to recompile things so that they were optimized, a la, Gentoo. Would YOU ever recommend Gentoo to someone who is trying to just have a Desktop OS?

I was referring to RH but linux is nowhere near ready for the masses.

Nope I just know that some people need a more basic requirement.

I had an experience today that shows that neither Linux NOR windows is really ready for the Masses. On Windows 2000 that we have installed at the place where I work, the woman who does the time cards and everything couldn't figure out how to move a tool bar from the right hand side to the bottom. Something as simple as this through the UI. And she's been working on this PC for about a year, not sure of her previous experience.

This same computer finally, after a long time of bugging the IT admin there, had a printer connected directly to it. (I had told the guy that he could just as easily set up the printer sharing for the computer that was RIGHT on the other side of this doorway in the supervisor's office. First he said it couldn't be done because it needed to be authenticated to the domain, then he said that it couldn't be done 'cause it was against policies to share a supervisor's printer. Then again, I would think it'd be against policy to waste the computer user's time on having to EMAIL the document to the supervisor, then print it up on her computer..... but then again, maybe that's just me.....). So finally, she has her own printer set up.... but oh wait, the IT guy didn't set the printer up as DEFAULT. It still had a different networked printer set up as default (one that was way down the hall.... yes, this man is an idiot.) I had to set up the printer as default, then of course this printer is a HP 660c (I think that was the model number) but it prints SLOWER than hell. Lousy IT guy....

That's a common n00b problem. I don't see the challenge...click...drag...drop. in XP, make sure the toolbar isn't locked.

Yeah, my point exactly! n00b as you put it, they're everywhere. THEY are the masses. SO if the masses can't figure out how to move toolbars around, are computers themselves even ready for the masses?
