I got around downloading Slackware 9.0 yesterday, cost me about 6€ in phone charges.

Installed it with mostly defaults, downloaded the 2.4.20 kernel and compiled it.
Started the RH9.0 Pro beta4 shellscript, made my XF86Config look like the Matrox examples and there it was.

X in it's full triplehead glory, I couldn't believe it.
It was running flawless, except for the lack of OpenGL, which I could figure out why it wouldn't work.

After a peek in the Matrox Tech Support forums, I found the answer.

The mtx.o busmastering module requires a folder named /dev/video to function.
On Slack9 and some other contemporary distros, it's symlinked to /dev/video0, which is some kind of capture device or something.

As soon as I deleted /dev/video and made a new folder there, GL worked!

NWN is lots faster than in Windows, and I'll try to get hold of WineX 3.1 to try out some other games.

Anyone have any suggestions of games who work good in Linux?

Trying to get hold of WineX 3.1, but haven't figured out how to get the CVS tree and build it.

I haven't tried NWN yet, but GLTron works great, Egoboo I haven't been able to get working after the first time (I have no clue why, I even had changed distros in the meantime.... still nothing). Tux Racer works great too. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory also runs fantastically.

A few things I have found. Bubbles3D and SBalls screensavers lock the system (there might be other GL screensavers that do this too....) So disable them. Also Innovation3D and Celestia both use GL and both reset X.

If you still have trouble getting it, I can send you a tarball. Haven't tried to build it myself yet, but 3.0 (or is it 3.0 preview 1?) doesn't work all that well for me.

I haven't gotten around digging up my UT2003 dics, and have not gotten around downloading Tux Racer and GLTron.

leech: My GL savers work flawlessly.

Ribbit: I would be thankful if you could send a tarball to zao@212.75.92.175 (the domainname has went down, so I gotta use the IP).

I get some graphical corruption after quitting NWN which is fixed as soon as I restart X.
Also some stray console pixels not in place when I Ctrl-Alt-Fx out of X with NWN running, but it does only occur if I do it repetadly, like at least 25 times.

OK Zao, but I warn you that it's nearly 9MB gzipped (didn't realise how large it was), and emailing it will make it even bigger (like, about 15MB). Is your mailbox limit big enough?

Edit: just done a little probe of your SMTP server (hope no-one minds - and yes that is my real email address if someone's reading the logs), and it seems your limit is too small. We'll have to find another way.

In the meantime, I've built it and tried it, and had a lot more success with it than with 3.0 - as in, I can actually install stuff with it now. Haven't managed to get anything to actually run with it yet. (With 3.0 the only game that I could even install was Jagged Alliance 2, and that would run for 10-15 minutes before 'hanging'. Haven't tried it with 3.1 yet.)

Further edit: I've just tried JA2 again, and this time it (just the game) froze while I was still typing in my personal info at the beginning. Oh well...

However, there are still plenty of games that won't install, mainly installShield games (e.g. CMR2, Freedom Force), and furthermore, I'm getting a lot of system freezes - the OS still responds to pings, but I can't e.g. ssh in or get a response from the SMTP server. Not sure what's going on there, but it's meant using the reset button (and ReiserFS has saved my butt a few times today).

InstallShield stuff is not working, because this is part of the payware. The CVS doesn't include the closed stuff, obviously. Thus it's not a bug, but a feature.

I've got WineX 2.1.1 right now, what games are compatible with that one?

I've got a XP install with NTFS and FAT32 partitions to preinstall stuff with.

Argh... 3.1 won't compile for me.
Can't look up the error messages right now, have to use Windows (boo) to access the internet.

I'm considering subscribing to WineX, to get all the juicy parts too.
