Mac osX 10.3.6 and Windows Sharing

The problem seems to be that you cannot create the smbpasswd.

seriously, our MacOS X machines connects to any share (Linux SMB, Irix NFS and WindowsXP share) without caring about existing user accounts, let alone passwords, but I have honestly no idea why that is even possible and our sysads couldn't be bothered to take care of Macs in general

I can see the computer but cannot access the shares on it. Suggests theres a password problem with it.

did you already try this ?

Macintosh OS X

* Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
* In the System Preferences window, click Network.
* Click the PPP tab.
* Re-enter your username and password in the Account Name and Password fields.
* Close the System Preferences and save the changes.

No using the PPP tab disconects the machine from the network altogether.

The connection works from the mac itself by the way.

Works on XP as well so it's a win2k problem. Doh.

If I remember corectly, you need to install "File services for Macintosh".

Start=>Settings=>Control panel=>Network, and here in "Advanced"=>"optional networking components...", then in "Other Network File and Printer Services" select "File services for Macintosh".

This step is needed on Win2000 server and Win2003 server.
But, if you have domain (or even active directory), and domain sufix is ".local", I'm not shure if could open files on Windows server from Mac OS X. Problem is that ".local" domain sufix is used by Mac OS X for it's internal comunication with itself.

Shouldn't do as it's Samba.
Remember I'm tryiong to access a mac share from a pc and not setting up a shared area on the pc for mac use.

Works without a problem here (at work and at home (Local active directory domain)). And you don't need the the old "File services for Macintosh".

Access from WinXP SP2 Pro to Mac OS X 10.3.6 works fine for me.
On Mac are started services "Personal File Sharing" and "Windows Sharing" in "Sharing". See if one of those services are not started.
