Well well well. I'm sort of with Kool on this one, just trying out Linux properly for the first time.
Decided I would give myself a small challenge - installing the P650 drivers. Can't be THAT hard, right?
Well
So you have to run the downloaded install file, make sure you have gcc, make installed, then choose a folder to put it in, no probs so far!
Wtf? it needs the source for the kernel? But... but... oh ok I'll figure out how to download and install that too. Grr.
But then it goes horribly wrong! the 'Build' link in my /lib/modules was wrong, probably because I updated the kernel (seemed like a good idea at the time). Btw this took me forever with Google to figure out.
Finally fixed that, and now there is an 'unexpected syntax' error in the compilation.
Am completely worn out by this. I am on my second install of Fedora because I broke the first, trying to enable hardware acceleration for the driver (I get the purple Matrox splash screen, not the blue one). I'm guessing that I need that module to compile properly before I can use hardware.
Of couse I only got that far from trying to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, which needs changed manually, naturally.
Bah this is so annoying. I was told before I started that Linux was a very 'feelgood' OS, because when you do any thing you feel like you have completed a great task. I'll keep going, and I do like Fedora overall, but everything seems to be a challenge!
