  • Super Mega Uber stumped on Fedora6, installing Matrox Drivers

Well well well. I'm sort of with Kool on this one, just trying out Linux properly for the first time.

Decided I would give myself a small challenge - installing the P650 drivers. Can't be THAT hard, right?

    Well

So you have to run the downloaded install file, make sure you have gcc, make installed, then choose a folder to put it in, no probs so far!

Wtf? it needs the source for the kernel? But... but... oh ok I'll figure out how to download and install that too. Grr.

But then it goes horribly wrong! the 'Build' link in my /lib/modules was wrong, probably because I updated the kernel (seemed like a good idea at the time). Btw this took me forever with Google to figure out.

Finally fixed that, and now there is an 'unexpected syntax' error in the compilation.

Am completely worn out by this. I am on my second install of Fedora because I broke the first, trying to enable hardware acceleration for the driver (I get the purple Matrox splash screen, not the blue one). I'm guessing that I need that module to compile properly before I can use hardware.

Of couse I only got that far from trying to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, which needs changed manually, naturally.

Bah this is so annoying. I was told before I started that Linux was a very 'feelgood' OS, because when you do any thing you feel like you have completed a great task. I'll keep going, and I do like Fedora overall, but everything seems to be a challenge!

I think you're finding out that Linux the OS that "Mom and Pops can Install and run" is a little more complex than people make out. Good to play around with and thats it. Yep there is a bit of satisfaction of finally getting soething to work after reading a few hundred articles that definatley work with your version of Linux.

Pity creative have never released LInux drivers for the X-FI. My Linux is mute forever at this present time.

Heh, I am glad I have some of your sympathy

Overall I find the 'feel' of Fedora very exciting and nice - I use Windows Server 2003 R2, Win2k and WinXP all day so I enjoy the differences with the M$ stuff. Things like typing sudo yum install xxxxx is just fun compared to a lifetime of windows - the way things are integrated is nice.

Getting hardware acceleration with the Matrox will also be nice, if it's possible. If interested, here is my post for help on the Matrox Forums.

Lets see how long I last. At least the nice sharp desktop icons of the Matrox are back, when it was a Windows Machine I had a ati radeon 9600 in it, and I can certainly tell the difference.

This driver seems the only one for me that ever worked with the newer kernels:

          Woohoo, I think!

I have managed to compile the driver (needed to download C++ libraries and kernel headers, they are seemingly different from the kernel source, and also to delete / recreate the 'build' link again in /limb/modules).

Err I think I only have accelerated (blue Matrox splash screen) in one of my monitors (I run them as separate desktops, not spanned), as the first one is still definitely purple. Weird eh? What a battle this is.

Boo! Have managed to crash X and now it won't boot. Time for recovery disk. What a nightmare! I might have to try those drivers that haig suggested
