  • Palit Daytona Geforce 2 "Pro"

    I finally caved in and sold my soul to the nDevil.
    I saw this incredibly cheap Geforce 2 Pro card in a webshop.

    80% of Kyro2 Price
    130% of MX or Radeon SDR price

    The card isn't a real GF Pro, as it's memory only runs at 183DDR, so it's bang in the middle of GTS and Pro specs.

    Seeing as the shop had a nice return policy I decided to give it a go (some of you might remeber that I've tried both a Radeon SDR and a Powercolor Evil Kyro and returned both of them).

    The card arrived today, and preparing myself for the shock of blurry 2D I installed it.

    I'm happy to report that the 2D is much much much better than I would have dreamed. It's still nowhere near Matrox, but I'm running my desktop at 1280x1024@85Hz and the text is quite crisp. Colours are a bit washed out, but this card is miles ahead of the Powercolor Kyro, and quite close to the Radeon SDR I tried.
    I wonder how I feel about it when I've used it a bit longer.

    The 3D speed is a really nice change from my aging G400 16Mb SH.

    With the drivers from the box and no tweaking I got a 2900 in 3Dmark2001, where my G400 was around 1200.

    UT Thunder demo 1024x768x32@85 Hz V-sync on gave me 80 FPS.
    1600x1200x16@85 Hz V-sync on gave 68 FPS

    GL_EXT gave

    Results:
    --------

    Overdraw/HSR:
    -------------
    Overdraw factor 3, back to front: 135.63 fps
    Overdraw factor 3, front to back: 186.77 fps
    Overdraw factor 3, random order: 161.83 fps

    Overdraw factor 8, back to front: 51.53 fps
    Overdraw factor 8, front to back: 81.23 fps
    Overdraw factor 8, random order: 71.30 fps

    Fillrate:
    ---------
    Pixel fillrate: 673.69 MegaPixels / s
    Texel fillrate: 1328.59 MegaTexels / s

    T&L/High polygon count static display list:
    -------------------------------------------
    Pure transform: 11588297 vertices / s
    2 point lights: 7417061 vertices / s
    8 point lights: 2971021 vertices / s
    2 directional lights: 10396157 vertices / s
    8 directional lights: 3975596 vertices / s

    High memory bandwidth load/texture cache efficiency:
    ----------------------------------------------------
    One 1024x1024x32 texture: 480.59 fps
    Four 1024x1024x32 textures: 482.06 fps

    The overdraw results seem rather low, but I guess I'm too used to seeing Kyro results

    I'll post more impressions and benches as I get them.

    Just did some more playing around.

    I'm now playing UT at 1600x1200x32 at around 70 fps average in gameplay, this is sweet

        Well, this being the cheapest GF2Pro card ever made (at least in these parts) the cooling is ... shall we say rather on the skimpy side
        So I'll have to modify it quite a bit, looking at ramsinks and coolers.

          Knew I could do it

          Managed to force the card to it's knees

          Ut at these settings:

          [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
          RefreshRate=75
          DetailTextures=1
          UseTrilinear=1
          UseS3TC=1
          UseTNT=1
          LODBias=0
          UseMultiTexture=1
          UsePalette=1
          UseAlphaPalette=0
          Translucency=1
          VolumetricLighting=1
          ShinySurfaces=1
          Coronas=0
          HighDetailActors=1
          MaxAnisotropy=0
          AlwaysMipmap=0
          UsePrecache=0
          SupportsLazyTextures=0

          And Anistropic forced in the drivers.
          Had to go down to 1024x768 to get playable framerates, but it looks SWEET
