  • Rainbow Runner G-series, NT

I was using a Matrox Mystique 220 with a Rainbow Runner Studio under Windows 98. However, I'm moving to NT for a variety of reasons, and I need a capture card that's compatible.

I can get a Matrox Millenium G200 8MB AGP for ~$50, and I've seen the Rainbow Runner G-series for ~$149. $200 sounds about right for an MJPEG editing solution that works with Premiere, as I understand the G-series RR does (at least, better than the Marvel?).

I use Ulead's software for capture and final playback (cutlist.dll support and timeline playback); I just prefer to edit in Premiere.

How successful have people been with the Rainbow Runner G-series under NT? Also, anyone know where I might find one that's in stock?

My system (I can use one or the other):
    1: PIII/450 on Intel SE-440BX2
    128MB PC100 SDRAM
    Monster Fusion Voodoo Banshee AGP
    Integrated Yamaha XS-DG PCI sound

    2: Celeron 300a on Diamond C400 (i440BX)
    128MB PC66SDRAM
Matrox Mystique 220 w/ Rainbow Runner
    SB Live! Value

    Thanks!

    Hi Charshman,

I've been struggling with trying to get my Matrox Marvel G-200 to work under NT, and it hasn't been fun. There are quite a few others out there who claim that they were able to get it working just fine, but I don't know what their secrets are...

My Marvel works perfectly when I boot up under Windows 98 - I can capture without hardly ever dropping a frame, Ulead MSP works great, playback is smooth and steady... But when I boot up NT on the same machine, it's a different story: I am much more likely to get dropped frames during capture, in MSP the scratch pad's jog/shuttle control doesn't work right, the 3D transitions don't work (no DirectX/Direct3D under NT), and during playback, I always get jerks and stutters.

I'll admit I'm rather new to NT, so part of my problem could very well be due to my inexperience with NT. NT is a pretty wierd system. Things that work fine one day just mysteriously stop working the next day (my scanner and CD burner both used to work under NT... a couple of months ago the CD burner stopped working under NT, even though I had done nothing at all to the system that could have caused it to stop working... a few days ago I discovered that my scanner no longer works under NT - again I did nothing that could have caused it to stop working... and naturally everything continues to work just fine under 98).

I don't know how much experience you have with NT, but if you don't have a lot of experience, then don't expect it to be easy...
