    Hai Guys

Recently I have problem with the avi files I capture with my mravel g200. The video sometimes skip the frame like loosing many frame (freeze) eventhough the software codec report it no drop frame.

Please help me if you know what cause theis problem

    My comp.spec: PIII MMX 550 MHZ, 128 MB, 27 GB,Abit BE 6, Marvel G200

    Thanks

    maybe it's your harddisk ??
i had a similar problem with my
    rainbowrunner.
capture tool reports 0frames dropped, but
when i watched the avi-file i saw hangouts
    in the movie.
    i tried nearly everything. bought a u66/dma
    controller, more ram, faster cpu.
    nothing helps !!!
then i captured on my boot-harddisk
(seagate 6GB) and surprise, the avi
    file is o.k. !!!
then i tried again on my 13,5 GB IBM
and the same hangouts could be seen in the
avi. i tried to swapp the HD and stuff,
put it on the first controller as standalone
HD and all this known stuff, but nothing.
my HD is defenite to slow or to instable
    to capture :-))

the ibm is just like 3-6MB/s (brandnew !!)
    the seagate goes 7-8MB/s (1year old !!)

    **** IBM !!!

i hope this will will help you. :-)

I had athe origianl RRS and that was my main complaint-skipped frames here and there even though no frames were reported dropped. This weekend got the Canopus Raptor up and running and no more skipping frames! Alas, I have run into some audio click noises in preview mode and some corrupted frames (see digital 8 topic). I believe it to be a problem with the hardware. Most people probably don't notice the problem.

I have a similar problem with my Marvel G200. Even at lowest MJPEG compression no dropped frames are reported, but during playback a lot of jerks. If I increase the compresion it improves a little. I have a Maxtor 13 GB EIDE drive which runs at about 7-9MB/s (according to HB benchmark). So a data rate of 2-3MB/sec should be no problem... I believe the problem has more to do with playback than capture, because the demo movie delivered with Avid shows the same problem.

Have you tried running HD Tach on the problem drive. I had exactly the same problem but, apart from the video playback the drive seemed to be working fine. When I ran HD Tach though it looked like a brain scan rather than a nice smooth curve (for disk throughput).

Luckily, my disk was less than a year old so I sent it back, got a new one and its been fine since.

But My HD is a brand new (Maxtor 66)
8~9/per second. I think it shoul be enough for handling 3mb video transfer rate.

I assume you don't have anything on the same IDE channel, do you?

This is a very old problem.

I could not find solution for myself. A lot of talks with many persons here on the forum did not gave a conclusion other than:
                1. It is NOT a hard drive related issue for a modern drives.
                2. It may sometimes be related to soundcard type, ... . Not in my case.
                3. Buying more RAM, RAID drives, increasing CPU power do not work.
4 Decreasing the datarate to very low values does not help to eliminate the problem: only may reduce the probability of stops.

These all points made me thinking that the problem is with the MJPEG codec on many systems. All my drives were working fine with at least doubled datarate, playing many software compressed or uncompressed video files.
Also, DV Raptor is not only able to work perfectly on my system, but it is NOT sensitive to such common "reasons" of skipping frames as:
                1. Drive fragmentation,
                2. Connection to another drives, such as outdated CD ROM, ZIP,... Type of connection: slave/master, system/dedicated for video, ...
                3. Sound card type.
                4. Reading/writing activity on another HD controller channel (!).
                5. Stars arrangement on the sky

Several times I made captures on my system drive by mistake, and had 0 dropped frames.

Using RR_G, I could export to tape 0 movies with 0 skipped frames. Every minute or so, a frame was skipped, in the best case. No one frame was reported as dropped in the movie.

                Grigory.

                  hi people!! :O)
                  i have a marvel G200
                  before that, a R amd Millenium 2
and have on order a Marvel G400

I hope im not tempting fate by saying this,
but Ive Never had a problem with the video capture skipping frames, not even when my hard drives are fragmented when i would expect it,
it has always perfromed flawlessly well :O)
                  no dropped frames
                  no audio clicks
                  no corrupted things

i know im not offering any help, i just wanted to defend the hardware side of things, and testify that it does work :O)

i wish you all the best in fixing your problem

I ran HD tach on my harddisk and obtained a smooth curve with datarates from 12500 to 15300 /sec. This should be sufficient for playback at 3M/sec.

Could it be that I use the same drive with my system but I do not have any thing else on the same IDE channel

Yep, that would be a likely reason. Take a look through the Idiots Guides and Tips and Tricks sections to find out about HD configuration.

Is there a way to find out that using your system drive for capture and playback is causing the problem. I would hate to buy an extra drive and then find out it wasn't the real problem.
