  • RR-G \ New Version?

    Ok, how’s this for a conspiracy theory;

The RR-G have been out of stock for a while now without word when we are going to see new ones available. How likely is it that a new updated one is on its way, with the new TV Tuner chipset support like the G400/TV. Any takers?

That is exactly the question I put to Matrox customer service, via e-mail, 3 days ago. I asked about the improved encoder and Maven TV-O. I have followed up with two more e-mails but have not heard anything back from Matrox yet.

If they make the RR as good as the G400 Marvel, then I will buy a G400 MAX and RR in a heartbeat.

So how hard can this be? Matrox has always been good at hardware, and we know that the drivers already work with this solution (see G400\TV). It also makes sense to use the same parts for both. Anyone else with word on this?

I've been waiting for months to get the G400 Max / RR-G combination. Now that I finally have a Max, I'm finding the RR-G series is impossible to find! I just can't win with Matrox...

I was considering a Marvel G400, but the lack of support for a second monitor was too much of a drawback for me.

I, too, haven't heard from Matrox about the RR-G (I've sent them two messages). I'm interested, does anyone know how long the RR-G series cards have been out of stock?

I moaned about the lack of RR-G's a couple of weeks ago. Haig replied and said they 'should be popping back up in a few weeks'.

Please, if you are having problems with emails to Matrox not being answered copy them to me making sure that I can see to whom they were sent.

I'll contact Matrox on your behalf to find out why the delay. I have done this on several occassions in the past with success

I received a reply to my inquiry with Matrox. My request was to be forwarded to Sales, with an e-mail response expected "shortly." A toll-free number was supplied as well, so I called.

The gentleman I spoke with did not think there should be any significant difference between the quality of a G400 Marvel vs. a G400+RR. He did not know of any changes to the RR. I asked about the differences between the Marvel and RR and he took the time to run down all the differences that we all know about. (Avid for 1st time users, MSP more complicated, targeted to different buyers. RR requires PCI slot. 16MB, 32MB and MAX can be used w/ RR, etc.) I was impressed with his candor and helpfulness.

He said the RR is expected to be back at the on-line store next week.

Well Chris, assuming that the RR is not changing, it looks like the continuation of your review, comparing the G400 Marvel to the G400+RR is going to be the true test. Need more coffee and cigars?

I just got this today. Surprisingly, Matrox replied in a manner of hours!

                Hello,

We are expecting the Rainbow Runner G-series the week of November 8 (between the 8th and 12th).

I know there must be differences between the RR-G and Marvel G400 based on comments I've read in this forum. Still, I had to pass on the Marvel G400 because support for two monitors was removed. This is a major drawback for me as I've been running multi-monitor for several months now. The idea of running two monitors with just one AGP cards was a plus for the Max. The fact the card also sports a higher clock rate and additional 16 MB of RAM doesn't hurt either. The Avid / MSPVE 5 issue has already been addressed a million times. All I have to say is that in the time I owned a Marvel G200, I never used Avid.

                  DaddyBay,

Yep, I smoke "Fleur de Savane", 100% african tobacco cigars made in France, and Carte Noir instant coffee (who can afford real coffee over here).

Disappointing that the Matrox rep didn't know the difference between the Tuner and Maven revisions that have already been published between the G-RR and the G400-TV. Looks like its down to me to do the user trial.

My expectations are that the G400-TV will come up tops for video capture/editing/printing quality and that hte G400 Max plus G-RR will remain adequate in that department while giving the edge in hi-res gaming. Oops, I'm giving my game plan away already.

Lets wait and see what it all looks like to the naked eye

So, anyone want to buy a slightly used RRG? Or possibly an RRG/Millenium G200 combo?

The RR-G that I received last week looks great as is. I am not sure if a difference could be shown of the output. There IS a bug with video capture where ANY glitch, or some dropped frames will cause a GPF when trying to edit it. This is really nasty and renders the RR-G useless except for TV until new drivers are out.

                              G400-MAX/RR-G with 5.30.007 + VT1.51 drivers.
