Ok, I was able to get DrBoB's method to work, with some minor alterations due to a few issues. Here is exactly what I did to install the VT 2.04.015 in Windows XP:

    1. Do a clean install of Win2k.
    2. Install PowerDesk 5.71.014 beta (www.matrox.com).
    3. Install WinINSTALL 2000 trial version (www.veritas.com).
    4. Run WinINSTALL 32-Bit Discover to take the "before" snapshot. Choose Microsoft Windows Installer as the type and choose a location for the created MSI image.
    5. Install Matrox Video Tools 2.04.015 (www.matrox.com).
    6. Reboot.
    7. Run WinINSTALL 32-Bit Discover to take the "after" snapshot. There will be an error because Discover doesn't seem to understand double-byte strings in the registry (REG_MULTI_SZ).
    8. Go the directory you chose for your MSI image in step 4, and open the registry file there using Notepad.
    9. Search the registry file for the word Multi. For each occurrence, you must use regedit.exe to manually delete the REG_MULTI_SZ string and recreate it as a REG_SZ string.
    10. Rerun WinINSTALL 32-Bit Discover to take the "after" snapshot. There shouldn't be any errors this time.
    11. ZIP everything in the directory you chose in step 4 and save the ZIP file somewhere.
    12. Do a clean install of Windows XP.
    13. Get the ZIP file from step 11 and extract it to a temporary directory.
    14. Double-click the .msi file in the temporary directory to install the video tools. You will get an error that vin.ax failed to register.
    15. Reboot.
    16. Open a command prompt in the video tools directory (C:\Program Files\Matrox Video Tools).
    17. Run regsvr32.exe vin.ax to register it.
    18. Reboot.

I'm not sure if this will work if your Windows directory is WINNT for Win2k and WINDOWS for WinXP, so you might need to force both Win2k and WinXP to use the same name for its main directory.

If anyone wants the ZIP file I created to try installing it on their XP machine, I will be happy to provide it. This will allow you start at step 12. The file is about 10 megs, and is for the English video tools only. It assumes C:\WINDOWS for Windows XP and C:\Program Files\Matrox Video Tools for the video tools.
