  • type 1 or type 2 DV?

    Who knows what's the difference between type 1 DV and type 2 DV - AVI's? My editing app. (Magix Video de Luxe) renders to DV-AVI but I can't read these in Vdub, Vdub saying that it isn't VfW compatible. I can convert it in TMPGenc and read it in Win Media Player which use DirectShow filters to cope with it. But I can't open them in Win Media Encoder! It gives an error message stating that the file "does not contain an audio track". So now, if I want to convert a file to Windows Media, I convert the DV-AVI to high res MPEG2 in TMPGEnc and then convert the MPEG2-file to WM7 in Media Encoder. I use this procedure when I want to put some project on CD, but it is too long for VCD. Why can't Win Media Encoder read what Media Player can?

    Type 1 DV uses the DirectShow multimedia standard. Type 1 DV is OpenDML compatable from the get-go and can therefore create up to 4 gig files on FAT32 drives and up to 2 terabyte files on NTFS drives (NTFS = filesystem for WinNT/2K/XP).

    Type 2 DV uses the older Video for Windows standard. On older non-OHCI devices this means a file size limit of 2 gigs tops unless the drivers support capturing & exporting to segmented files (file.00.avi, file.01.avi etc.). With OHCI devices and a decent DV codec (Main Concepts, for example) there is also OpenDML support for exports, but this is by no means universal.

    There are other major differences, mainly in how the audio is packed. A full rundown is here;
